WARSAW PRIDE 2009
The Parade in Warsaw:
June 13, Saturday
The Warsaw Pride theme for 2009 is:
“40 years of Equality, 20 years of Freedom”
This year we are commemorating two exceptional events:
1) 40 years ago in June, the Stonewall riots were the first mass demonstrations against the persecution of homosexuals. They took place in Christopher Street, NYC.
2) 20 years ago in June, Poland celebrated the first free parliamentary elections, which started a process that eventually led to the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe.
Despite the changes in the political system 20 years ago, homosexuals in Poland are still discriminated. There is no possibility to register a legal partnership, hate speech is common and unbridled, education on homosexuality at schools is false and prejudicial. We shall march the streets of Warsaw to protest against this injustice and to show that we have the right to live according to our convictions, we have the right to love and to be ourselves.
